As an Australian writer who is currently focusing on web content, it is too easy for us to disappear into the American grammatical focus on the singular for collective nouns, when web content should be conversational in style. Anecdotally, people seem to tend towards using plural with their collective nouns but being able to articulate this as a 'rule' (or guideline) has always proven difficult.
