Two practice exercises
Practice Exercises - general principles- Unless shown otherwise in the brackets (), start each sentence with a capital letter and finish with a full stop, but don't add any other punctuation.
- Remember that when there is more than one auxiliary verb, only the first one is inverted. Any others stay with the main verb.
- If you 'copy and paste', be careful not add any extra spaces; the program needs you to be exactly right: it's not very clever.
- You can check your answers at any time - click on Check
- Clicking the clue buttons ? (at the moment hidden) will give you the next word, but try not to use them unless you get really stuck. You will need to click on 'show' first.
- If you want to empty all the boxes and start again, click on the Clear button.
Exercise 3 - Make inverted sentences from the sentences given, using the words in brackets ().
1. | You shouldn't tell him about my trip to China. (On no ...)
2. | You are not going to get me to eat that! (No way ... !)

8. | He wasn't rich and he wasn't handsome. (Neither ...)

You can make a teacher copy with answers by clicking on 'Show All'. Make sure you 'Clear All' before printing student copies. Or you can print normally and the answers will appear on a separate page (Page 5), after the exercises (pages 2-4). I strongly recommend doing a Print Preview first. You might want to change your margins and you certainly won't want to print every page.

Thanks for the comment, Abdullah, and thanks too for becoming a follower. Good luck with your exam. :)
Thanks, so useful for my Academic Writing class! I'd much rather use your examples than good ol' Graver ;)
Wow! Compliment indeed. Actually I use Graver a bit, lent to me by one of my Polish colleagues, who had learnt from it herself. I don't use in class, but to teach myself a bit about grammar. For example I'd never heard of coordinated relative clauses till I read him.
Thanks for joining the followers. I had a quick look at your blog and really like your photos.

really , thanks alot
Thanks for these exercises! There's a mistake though in exercise 3, sentence 10 - "The bridge collapsed as soon as we managed to get across." Before transforming it with negative inversion one should consider what happened first, according to the root sentence, they came across the bridge, then the bridge collapsed, but as we type:
"No sooner had the bridge collapsed than we managed to get across." it's considered incorrect. The website suggests that the "right" version is: "No sooner had we managed to get across than the bridge collapsed." which makes no sense at all.
Hi duscher, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. As you rightly say, the idea is that first they came across the bridge and then it collapsed. In the "no sooner ... than ..." construction, "no sooner" introduces the first event, and "than" the second event - "No sooner had we gone out than it started to rain" - in other words, we went out and then it immediately started to rain.
So in my version "No sooner had we managed to get across than the bridge collapsed" does indeed mean that first we got across (the bridge), and then, immediately after, the bridge collapsed.
On the other hand "No sooner had the bridge collapsed than we managed to get across" would mean that first the bridge collapsed, and then we got across. Although this is possible, if we had swum across or found a boat perhaps, it is not the meaning of the original sentence.

IELTS Exam question
Hello.
I can definitely say, that exercise is very good and helpful. Sometimes I can make stupid mistakes, so, I try to correct my paragraph online. It is very convenient when you don't have the time or sources to check your grammar. All of us can do mistakes, that is why it is an opportunity to write perfectly with no mistakes.
Really good excercise, thanks a lot C:
